SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME FOR MIGRANTS IN VIENNA
START-WIEN (START VIENNA)
In Austria too, it is a sad fact that educational success is closely linked to pupils’ backgrounds. Teenagers who have experienced migration or displacement are disadvantaged in the school system and less likely to achieve a formal educational qualification. START-Wien supports committed students from low-income families on the path to their Matura (which allows them to enter third-level education) or vocational school certificate.
For whom?
Upper secondary-school pupils (aged 15–21) in Vienna with a background of migration or displacement
Aim
General school-leaving certificate (Matura) / vocational school certificate
Duration

Location
Vienna, Austria
For a society with equal opportunities
The START scholarship is a programme run by the charitable Hertie-Stiftung, and has won multiple awards. In 2006, the Crespo Foundation took the scholarship to Austria and adapted it to suit the situation there.
The START scholarship offers financial assistance, workshops and seminars, advice and support in educational matters as well as cultural and leisure activities. Art projects inspire the scholarship holders to discover their hidden creative potential. The prerequisites for receiving a scholarship are good grades in school and, above all, civic engagement. Are you ready to start? Then apply for a START scholarship now.
ULLI CRESPO START art prize
As the initiator of START in Vienna – and hence in Austria – Ulrike Crespo cared deeply that the scholarship holders should learn about art. In memory of what she achieved and of who she was as a person, START-Wien awards an annual art prize that bears her name to one of the scholarship holders who has shown artistic talent.
